The Dutchman was the pre-race favourite, but few foresaw the dominance that was to unfold on the streets of the Norwegian City.
Primoz Roglic finished a distant second, with Britain’s Chris Froome in third.
Much of the pre-race discussion centred around whether riders would change bikes ahead of the steep climb at the end of the course.
But Dumoulin and Froome were among the riders who opted against a bike change, backing themselves to climb the technical ascent on a trial bike.
The gamble paid off for both riders, but Dumoulin's lead was so large at the foot of the climb that he almost caught Froome by the finish.
The win completes a terrific year for the Dutchman, who won the Giro d'Italia back at the start of the summer.
"I cannot believe it," a delighted Dumoulin said. "It's really amazing, I've had such a good day.

"I think I was one of the favourites, but then it's maybe even more difficult to stay calm. But I was calm; I was on a good day.
"I still have the road race, I'm still focussed. There will definitely be some celebrations tonight and tomorrow and then it's focus on Sunday."
