The category one climb at Puerto del Escudo can mark this stage. This climb is 100 km away from the finish line and despite the challenge it should not pose any problem for the riders.
Burgos has only known one Spanish champion, Paco Saez. This rider, who won the bronze medal in the 1967 world championships, crossed the finish line first in 1970. Today the favorites are Erik Zabel, Alessandro Petacchi and Angel Edo among others.
Today's category one climb is 7km long with an 8.8 per cent inclination, which is almost nothing. The ascent can break the stage and with 100 km left between the peak of the climb and the finish line, sprinters have a good opportunity to take the win in the streets of Burgos. The final 40 km are the ideal spot for sprinters to make their attack and surprise the peloton.
Speed will be the major actor if the peloton reaches Burgos in one piece. The finish line is located in a 1.4 km long street. And it's a dream finish for sprinters.
