Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon–SRAM zondacrypto) was taken to hospital after a dramatic crash involving several riders, including team-mate Agnieszka Skalniak-Sojka at Strade Bianche.
The 2024 Tour de France Femmes winner and her team-mate have been cleared of having any major injuries, as confirmed by their team.
Niewiadoma hit the guardrail following a collision that temporarily halted five other riders on a sharp corner on a descent.
The others were initially able to continue, including fellow Canyon-SRAM riders Alice Towers and Agnieszka Skalniak-Sojka, but Niewiadoma appeared to be in some discomfort as she received treatment from her team and race doctor on the tarmac.
Her husband, former American cyclist Taylor Phinney, also offered an update and confirmed she was in good spirits.
Phinney said: "Kasia is OK just road rash and hit her head…luckily I was 2km away and made it to her just in time to ride w/her in ambulance to hospital. Waiting to do some precautionary X-rays, she’s in good spirits, mostly p***** she couldn’t race."
Niewiadoma was unable to continue, while team-mate Skalniak-Sojka also withdrew soon after. Canyon-SRAM later said that the 30-year-old had been taken to hospital.
"It looked like that corner was just overshot there. The barrier was hit. She had two team-mates with her," said Dani Rowe on TNT Sports commentary.
Niewiadoma broke down in tears after missing out on a place on the podium during last year's race.
The Pole finished fourth last time out and will now have to wait to record her first win at the iconic Italian event.
Rowe's fellow TNT Sports commentator Marty MacDonald recognised that it was a terrible incident for Niewiadoma's team.
"What a disaster for her team Canyon–SRAM," added MacDonald. "The doctor is with Kasia and hopefully she is ok."
