Jonas Vingegaard crashes in training - but escapes serious injury - as amateur claims he was 'trying to drop me'

"Jonas fell while trying to drop me and I stopped to ask him how he was. He got angry with me". That was the account of one Strava user, who claimed that trailing Jonas Vingegaard on a training run caused the three-time Grand Tour winner to crash. Another said his face was "bleeding in two places", while Visma-Lease a Bike released their own statement to remind amateur riders of the dangers.

Visma-Lease a Bike have confirmed that Jonas Vingegaard crashed during training on Monday but that he has avoided serious injury.
It was reported that Vingegaard was trying to drop a tailing fan and was left bloodied after falling on a descent just outside of Malaga.
And in a post on social media Visma warned amateur riders of the dangers of approaching riders during training, which seemingly confirmed the cause of Vingegaard's accident.
A statement released by the team on Tuesday read: "Jonas Vingegaard crashed during training on Monday. Fortunately, he is okay and did not sustain any serious injuries.
"In general, as a team we would like to urge fans on bikes to always put safety first. For both your own and others’ well-being, please allow riders to train and give them as much space and peace as possible."
The trailing fan, Pedro Garcia Fernandez, posted his side of the story on Strava (a social networking and fitness app that riders use to track rides) and said that he angered Vingegaard after following him.
This prompted a reaction from the two-time Tour de France winner.
"Following Jonas' wheel and Jonas' fall," he wrote. "You can be a professional but you can also be humble.
"Jonas fell while trying to drop me down the Fuente la Reina trail, and I stopped to ask him how he was. He got angry with me for following his wheel on the descent. He was going fast to drop me and ended up on the ground.
"I don't make a living from this, and I'm an amateur like most, so I don't understand his anger as a professional about it."
Another witness posted their account on Strava, revealing that Vingegaard's face was "bleeding in two places" and that he was left "very angry".
"You both passed me coming down and as I was almost at the last bend, I found Jonas by the guardrail, his face bleeding in two places. He must have hit it hard to drag his face along the ground. I stopped and asked him if he needed help, and he told me no, to go away, very angry.
"Now I understand. It’s clear he’s the professional and responsible for how he rides, but I also think that people like him, who are professionals and have so much at stake, should be given their space and respected."
Vingegaard was putting in the work ahead of the new season.
Last year's Vuelta a Espana champion has already confirmed that he will compete in the Giro d’Italia for the first time, along with the Tour de France.
