Spanish cyclist Jaume Guardeno in intensive care after training collision with vehicle

Spanish cyclist Jaume Guardeno suffered serious injuries in a crash with a vehicle during a training ride on Tuesday. The 23-year-old had to be rushed to hospital by helicopter after colliding with a vehicle and he remains in intensive care. Guardeno finished 29th in the Volta a Catalunya last week and it was hoped he may make his Tour de France debut this summer.

Spanish cyclist Jaume Guardeno is in intensive care after suffering serious injuries when he was involved in a crash with a vehicle during a training ride on Tuesday.

Guardeno, 23, finished 29th in the Volta a Catalunya last week.

Spanish outlet AS has reported that Guardeno hit a rock on a training ride, which caused his trajectory towards the path of an oncoming vehicle where he is said to have hit his head.

Guardeno was airlifted to hospital, according to his team Caja Rural-Seguros RGA, and is in ICU where his injuries are being assessed.

A statement from Guardeno's team on social media read: ”Our teammate Jaume Guardeno suffered a fall on Tuesday during training.

"Following his recent participation in the Volta a Catalunya, he was involved in a collision with a vehicle, resulting in serious injury.

”As a result of his accident, the Alicante cyclist who lives in Caldes de Montbui, was rushed by helicopter to the Tauli Hospital in Sabadell where he remains in ICU with serious injuries and his condition being monitored.

”We at Caja Rural-Seguros RGA would like to pass on our full support and encouragement to Jaume and his family at this difficult time and wish him a quick and full recovery. We will provide further updates as his condition develops.”

Guardeno made his debut in the Vuelta de Espana in 2025 and finished 14th.
