Mikel Landa: Soudal Quick-Step rider fractures collarbone after another crash at Itzulia Basque Country

Soudal Quick-Step riders Mikel Landa and Gil Gelders were both involved in another major crash which at this year's Itzulia Basque Country. Soudal Quick-Step confirmed in an official statement that Landa suffered a fractured collarbone after he was rushed to hospital. Movistar's Gonzalo Serrano was also forced to abandon. The incident came just a day after a mass crash on Stage 4.

Soudal Quick-Step riders Mikel Landa and Gil Gelders were forced to withdraw from Itzulia Basque Country after a crash on Stage 5; the event's penultimate stage.

The crash took place at the foot of the Urkiola - a category 1 climb - with around 100km of the stage left to go. Landa was seen on camera being stretchered away into an ambulance.

Landa, who was the runner-up at the Volta a Catalunya last month, was taken to hospital where X-rays revealed that he has suffered a fracture to his clavicle.

The team confirmed: "He will now undergo further investigation to determine the best path for his recovery."

Gelders, meanwhile, was "given medical attention on the spot and was treated for abrasions".

The incident came just a day after there were multiple fallers in a mass crash on Stage 4 which saw Visma-Lease a Bike's Jonas Vingegaard break his collarbone and several ribs.

Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quickstep) sustained a broken collarbone and scapula, while Jay Vine (UAE Team Emirates) sustained a cervical and two thoracic spine vertebral body fractures.

Gonzalo Serrano (Movistar) was also caught up in the crash and Movistar later confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) he abandoned the race.

The stage was won by Romain Gregoire (Groupama - FDJ), with Orluis Aular (Caja Rural - Seguros RGA) in second and Maximilian Schachmann (BORA - hansgrohe) third.
