ASGREEN UPSETS SPRINTERS TO WIN STAGE 14
Kasper Asgreen (EF Education-EasyPost) upset the odds and took a fine solo victory from the day’s breakaway in Stage 14 of the Giro d’Italia.
The four-man breakaway looked doomed as Visma-Lease a Bike and Alpecin – Deceuninck worked on the front to keep their advantage to less than two minutes throughout.
However, once the peloton reached the wet finishing circuit around Nova Gorica a crash with 22 kilometres remaining impacted the race.
Race leader Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) avoided the crash but most of his general classification rivals were delayed.
With the peloton severely diminished by the crash, Asgreen seized his chance and went alone to win by 16 seconds.
After running out of team-mates sprinters Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Olav Kooij (Visma-Lease a Bike) managed second and third respectively.
The stage dented the hopes of a host of general classification favourites as Primoz Roglic (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) and Juan Ayuso (UAE) lost over a minute on overall leader Toro.

ASGREEN REFLECTS ON ‘TOUGH DAY’ FOR VICTORY
"It was a tough day out there.
"It’s annoying that you have to destroy yourself completely like this to win bike races, when it works out it is all worth it. I’m super-pleased right now.
"The team gave me permission and the freedom to go for it today. I’m super-grateful for that. I’ve tried it before [a long breakaway] and know that once you get into the second half of a Grand Tour, even if it’s a flat stage, if you get a good group who work well together then you can make it.
"Everybody has tired legs and that’s what made a difference today. The circuit was quite technical at the end, wet roads makes it hard for the bunch to go faster than us at the front."

ASGREEN WINS ALONE
The mayhem behind has resulted in the perfect opportunity for Asgreen who wins and has time to celebrate.
Kaden Groves just fends off Olav Kooij in the sprint from a reduced peloton to take second and third place respectively.
Del Toro finished in the first chasing group with Bernal, Roglic and Ayuso finishing 1’02" down on the leader and 0.45" behind the overall leader.
16:05
1KM TO GO: ASGREEN ALONE
With no organised chase behind Asgreen looks to have pulled this one off.
16:02
3KM TO GO: YATES CHASING DOWN LONE LEADER
With Van Aert having done a huge turn at the front the chasing group has run out of domestics. Simon Yates is left to chase Asgreen on his own just 0’14" back.
The odds have firmly swung in the breakaway rider’s favour.
16:00
5KM TO GO: ASGREEN GOES SOLO
There is a huge chase over the small Saver climb as groups are split all over this finishing circuit.
Asgreen has gone alone and has 0’16" on the chasers, while the Roglic and Ayuso group are at 0’56"
15:54
9KM TO GO: DEL TORO AVOIDS CRASH
The overall leader somehow keeps his bike upright. It is the exact position where the big crash happened on the previous lap.
15:53
10KM TO GO: AYUSO LOSING TIME
There are several groups including GC favourites chasing for their hopes. Despite Del Toro being in the leading group UAE are chasing behind to get Juan Ayuso back to the front.
Roglic has also lost time and is in the second group. Visma continue to lead the chasing group 0’25" behind the breakaway with Ayuso’s group 1’10" behind.
A further group containing Antonio Tiberi is 2'02" behind
15:48
15KM TO GO: TREACHEROUS FINISHING CIRCUIT
There have been several ‘nearly’ moments on the wet streets of Nova Gorica.
The wet roads and white lines have resulted in the riders taking it very slowly around the corners. Which GC riders are in which groups on the road is currently unknown.
Egan Bernal is definitely in the chasing group after coming down in the crash.
15:42
20KM TO GO: VAN AERT PULLING BUNCH
The Visma star has taken control of the front of the leading group as they chase down the breakaway.
With Pedersen among those gapped there is going to be a select group competing for the win. The breakaway currently has an advantage of 0’54".
Tom Pidcock and Kaden Groves are also in the leading group, along with race leader Isaac Del Toro.
15:38
22KM TO GO: BIG CRASH ON COBBLES
The bunch is brought to a standstill after a huge crash on the cobbles Ben Turner and Mads Pedersen are two of those who have come down.

25KM TO GO: ENTERING THE FINISHING CIRCUIT
Asgreen is still driving the breakaway which currently has an advantage of 1’00. The peloton are taking it steady on the wet corners and then pulling back time on the climbs.
Riders have two ascents of the 700-metre long Saver climb.
15:30
30KM TO GO: TENSION RISING IN BUNCH
The pressure is certainly on as riders take on a very wet and greasy descent.
Damiano Caruso throws away his rain jacket and it almost knocks the glasses off Dylan van Baarle. The Visma rider is less than impressed despite the apology of Caruso.
15:25
33KM TO GO: TARLING SHOWS STRENGTH
The youngster is setting the pace of the descent for his team and rode the rest off his wheel. Eventually Tarling looks around and sits up to wait for his team-mates.
His turn of pace on the descent has seen the breakaway’s advantage reduced to 0’37"
15:19
37KM TO GO: BREAKAWAY REDUCED TO THREE
Clément Davy (Groupama-FDJ ) has been dropped as Kasper Asgreen (EF Education-EasyPost) drives the breakaway on the climb of Goniace / San Martino.
The Cat.4 climb has an average of 4% but does have much steeper sections. Asgreen picks up the KOM points at the top.
15:13
40KM TO GO: DARK SKIES FOR TIGHT FINISHING CIRCUIT
The action is firmly hotting up at the Giro as the pace rises. With the prospect of rain on the descents and climbs to come all the teams want their leaders towards the front.
Visma and Ineos are both fighting for the front position. Ahead of the bunch the breakaway has an advantage of 1’30".
15:08
45KM TO GO: FRETIN HOPES FOR ‘RESULT’
Cofidis sprinter Milan Fretin will be looking to improve on his second placed finish on Stage 6.
Talking to TNT Sports ahead of today’s stage, he said: "I'm excited. It will be the last sprint and then there will be some hard stages.
"It’s the last chance for the sprinters today for a long time. I hope we can do a bit of a result today.
Heading into the small climbs in Slovenia? "It will be very important to be in front there, especially on the last local lap.
"We expect some hard racing maybe some attacks on the last lap."

48KM TO GO: CRASH IN PELOTON
A very dangerous section of road as the races passes through a village. The breakaway almost come down on a tight corner onto a paved surface.
The majority of the bunch pass through safely. However, Luca Covili (VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizane) does come down and needs a bike change.
