Mayo performed with astounding class on the formidably steep Mount Ventoux climbs, establishing the best time of 55 minutes and 51 seconds, to ease past Hamilton.

Hamilton's Phonak teammate, Oscar Sevilla, came third 1:03 behind, while fellow Spaniard Juan Miguel Mercado (QuickStep-Davitamon) was fourth 1:48 adrift.

Five-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong (U.S. Postal) could only manage fifth, trailing in nearly two minutes behind Mayo.

The Euskaltel rider, bidding for a Tour de France win after his sixth place in the 2003 edition, got his first taste of yellow on Mount Ventoux, and now leads the overall standings by 36 seconds over Hamilton, 1:14 over Sevilla and exactly two minutes over Armstrong.
