Sweden's Moa Ilar held off Jessie Diggins for the first FIS Cross-Country World Cup win of her career in the 20km mass start free in Ruka, Finland.
Just 0.3 seconds separated Ilar from the American, as she followed up her fourth-place finish in the classic 10km on Saturday, then a career-best.
"It was super tough but I'm so happy about the race today," Ilar said.
"I felt better and better and at the end I felt really strong, so I am super happy."
Diggins lost her pole and glove late on but was still able to battle to second, narrowly missing out on the win, while compatriot Rosie Brennan completed the podium.
In the men's race, there was a similarly close finish, as Norway's Jan Thomas Jenssen matched Ilar in taking a first World Cup success.
He proved his strength late on, withstanding the efforts of Michal Novak, of Czechia, to take victory by 0.7 seconds, with Harald Oestberg Amundsen completing the podium.
Britain's Andrew Musgrave made a strong start to his campaign, finishing in eighth place, 4.6 seconds behind the leader.
