Reece Topley has been fined by the ICC for smashing a chair in frustration after injuring his right knee in England’s T20 series opener against the West Indies.
England lead the current T20 series with West Indies 2-0, and will play the third match in Saint Lucia on Thursday, live on TNT Sports and discovery+.
The England fast bowler has been ordered to pay 15% of his match fee following his actions, having picked up the injury whilst bowling.
Topley tried to complete his over after a brief rain delay in Barbados, but was forced to withdraw after one more delivery.
The 30-year-old then made his way to the players’ pavilion, and was seen holding a chair aloft and crashing it onto the staircase handrail.
ESPN reports that Topley has been found guilty of a Level 1 breach of the ICC’s Code of Conduct, specifically relating to Article 2.2 – an "abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an International Match."
He has since accepted the punishment after admitting the offence, meaning no formal hearing is needed.
One demerit point will also be added to Topley’s disciplinary record – should he reach four or more within a two-year period, this will be converted into suspension points and a ban. However, this is Topley’s first offence of this nature.
This is not the first time that Topley has reacted angrily to an injury, though. He vented his frustration after a left-index finger break during the 50-over World Cup in October 2023.
The extent of Topley’s injury is unknown, but he was ruled out of the second T20 match on Sunday.
Topley has endured a series of injury problems in recent years, including a stress fracture to his back and an ankle problem that saw him miss England’s victorious 2022 T20 World Cup campaign.
