New Zealand duo Tom Latham and Devon Conway achieved the incredible milestone of becoming the first openers to score centuries in both innings of a first-class cricket match.
The feat came in the Kiwis’ third and final Test against the West Indies, as Latham claimed totals of 137 and 101, and Conway amassed hauls of 227 and 100.
According to ESPNcricinfo, it is only the fourth occasion where a pair of batters have scored hundreds in each innings of a Test.
Sri Lanka’s Dhananjaya de Silva and Kamindu Mendis were the last duo to achieve the feat against Bangladesh last year.
Pakistan's Azhar Ali and Misbah-ul-Haq were the second pair in that list – and the first in 40 years – after doing so against Australia in 2014.
Ian and Greg Chappell were the first players on the list, for Australia against New Zealand in Wellington back in 1974.
Commentators Katey Martin and Mark Richardson both waxed lyrical after Latham reached his century.
"What a reward for a gritty and determined character," said Martin.
"Just a wonderful batsman, a wonderful cricketer, and over the years he has made that opening spot his. He is one of New Zealand's greatest openers and greatest cricketers," added Mark Richardson.
Meanwhile, Conway is the 10th batter in Test history to claim a double hundred and a hundred in the same match.
He joins an illustrious list that also includes Greg Chappell, Sunil Gavaskar, Shubman Gill, Graham Gooch, Marnus Labuschagne, Brian Lara, Lawrence Rowe, Kumar Sangakkara and Doug Walters in achieving that feat.
Conway is also the second to do so this year, following Gill's totals of 269 and 161 for India against England in July.
Latham’s and Conway’s exploits leave the West Indies with a mountain to climb, needing to achieve a record run chase of 462 for victory. They closed on 43 for no wicket.
