New Zealand cruise to victory over England in first ODI with 13.2 overs to spare despite dazzling Harry Brook hundred

New Zealand claimed a four-wicket win in the first ODI at Mount Maunganui. Harry Brook smashed 135 from 101 balls to rescue the visitors from 10-4, but Daryl Mitchell's unbeaten 78 and a crucial stand with Michael Bracewell saw the hosts chase down 224 with ease. Brydon Carse's three wickets offered brief hope before the Black Caps took control to go 1-0 up in the series.

New Zealand win by four wickets

Harry Brook’s brilliant hundred was in vain as New Zealand cruised to the target of 224, beating England by four wickets in the first ODI at Mount Maunganui.
Daryl Mitchell’s unbeaten 78 guided the Black Caps to victory with a crucial 92-run partnership with Michael Bracewell (51) effectively breaking the back of the low run chase, despite three early wickets from Brydon Carse (3-45) - including Kane Williamson’s first golden duck in ODIs.
Earlier, Brook played one of the great England ODI knocks, hitting 135 off 101 balls, with 11 sixes, rescuing his side from 10-4. Only one other Englishman reached double figures, Jamie Overton with 46.
England’s hopes of victory were severely shrunk when, after Matt Henry (2-53) bowled Jamie Smith with the first delivery of the match, Zakary Faulkner (4-41) took the wickets of Ben Duckett (2), Joe Root (2) and Jacob Bethell (2) - the latter two fantastic deliveries smashing into the timber of the England batters.
Henry found the outside edge of Jos Buttler (4) and Foulkes did the same with Sam Curran (4) leaving England at 56-6, and only an 87-run partnership with Overton and an English-record 57-run partnership for the tenth wicket with Luke Wood saw Brook lift his score well over the 100-mark, his fourth century in 12 innings in New Zealand, as he steered England over 200.
The second ODI takes place on Wednesday at 01:00 GMT in Hamilton, with the third and final match of the series taking place in Wellington at the same time on Saturday.
All matches in this series and the 2025-26 Ashes will be shown live and exclusive on TNT Sports and discovery+.

How the match unfolded...

New Zealand 224-6 (36.4 overs): Mitchell 78, Smith 5

Mitchell with a flat six gets New Zealand within four of victory, then a rank half-tracker on leg stump is helped to the square leg boundary.

New Zealand 212-6 (36 overs): Mitchell 66, Smith 5

A fine cut off the back foot gives Smith a four. New Zealand within two hits of victory now - potentially.

New Zealand 208-6 (35 overs)

Could there be a New Zealand wobble here? You wouldn't think so.

Wicket! Santner c Overton b Rashid 27
New Zealand 207-6 (34.4 overs)

Santner goes for a third six in the over but this time it is caught at long off by Overton.

New Zealand 207-5 (34.3 overs): Mitchell 66, Santner 27

Rashid comes back into bowl and the first ball is too full and Santner's eyes light up as he smacks it 92m straight down the ground. Two balls later, the ball flies over the boundary again, this time over mid-on.

New Zealand 195-5 (34 overs): Mitchell 66, Santner 15

Carse's last over goes for four, leaving him with figures of 3-45.

New Zealand 191-5 (33 overs): Mitchell 64, Santner 14

Santner is lucky as he cloths a hook off Wood which was just in front of Carse at fine leg. He will feel he should have caught it having got his fingers too it. Later in the over Santner was not too far from holing out to Smith at deep mid-wicket. The over ends with a four from Mitchell.

New Zealand 181-5 (32 overs): Mitchell 59, Santner 10

As encouraging as Carse's display has been, England will hope his no-ball issues are not replicated in Australia. He has three in this innings, as well as five wides.

New Zealand 179-5 (31 overs): Mitchell 59, Santner 10

England thought they had Santner caught behind off Wood but replays show it came off the arm guard.

New Zealand 177-5 (30 overs): Mitchell 59, Santner 8

It was worth a go with Carse but it hasn't worked. A full toss is sliced over backward point for four as New Zealand now need less than fifty for victory.

New Zealand 168-5 (29 overs): Mitchell 58, Santner 2

Mitchell hits the first six of the innings ramping Wood over the fine leg boundary.

New Zealand 160-5 (28 overs): Mitchell 51, Santner 1

A good over from Carse just conceding two. New Zealand may be wise just seeing out his last three overs.

New Zealand 158-5 (27 overs): Mitchell 50, Santner 0

This opens the possibility of England winning again and Brook gives the ball to Carse hoping he can replicate his earlier spell.

Wicket! Bracewell run out (Overton) 51
New Zealand 158-5 (26.4 overs)

Bracewell goes for a quick single to mid on but Overton collects and throws down the stumps in one motion.

New Zealand 158-4 (26.3 overs): Mitchell 50, Bracewell 51

Mitchell reaches 50 and then Bracewell tries to hook a ball but too quick on the shot connects with the backside of the bat and gets a couple, before pulling for four to pass the half-century mark.

New Zealand 151-4 (26 overs): Mitchell 49, Bracewell 45

Mitchell reverse sweeps the first ball inside slip for four. He tries and misses the shot from the next ball and England send it upstairs. But it comes off the bat before hitting his pad. Next up, an orthodox sweep gets him another four.

New Zealand 142-4 (25 overs): Mitchell 40, Bracewell 45

At the halfway mark, New Zealand are well ahead of schedule, needing a snail-paced 3.4 an over to win if they were to bat the whole 50 overs.

New Zealand 134-4 (24 overs): Mitchell 34, Bracewell 44

Wood drops Mitchell when the batsman reverse sweeps Rashid straight to him at gully.

New Zealand 130-4 (23 overs): Mitchell 33, Bracewell 41

Curran keeps his over tight but is pretty unthreatening.

New Zealand 127-4 (22 overs): Mitchell 33, Bracewell 39

Bracewell hooks Overton behind square just short of the boundary. They now require less than a hundred.

New Zealand 121-4 (21 overs): Mitchell 32, Bracewell 34

The 50 partnership comes up off 55 balls. They came together with the Black Caps in a fairly parlous situation.

New Zealand 114-4 (20 overs): Mitchell 30, Bracewell 30

Bracewell punches a lovely drive inside mid-off as New Zealand pass the halfway mark.

New Zealand 107-4 (19 overs): Mitchell 29, Bracewell 24

So often England's game changer, Rashid is disappointed at giving the Black Caps batsmen opportunities to score.

New Zealand 104-4 (18 overs): Mitchell 29, Bracewell 21

A decent over from Overton. Stifling the Kiwis will not be enough though.

New Zealand 101-4 (17 overs): Mitchell 28, Bracewell 19

A gorgeous cover drive and then one between mid-off and extra cover sees Bracewell bring the New Zealand 100-up.

New Zealand 92-4 (16 overs): Mitchell 28, Bracewell 10

Bracewell with a strong pull in front of square for four. These two look fairly comfortable now.

New Zealand 86-4 (15 overs): Mitchell 27, Bracewell 5

The Black Caps take a more aggressive approach to Rashid and it is effective, hitting 11 off the over, including a swept four from Mitchell.

New Zealand 75-4 (14 overs): Mitchell 19, Bracewell 2

A good first over from Overton which ends with him getting the outside edge of Bracewell, only for Root to drop the chance at slip.

New Zealand 71-4 (13 overs): Mitchell 17, Bracewell 1

Bracewell is not finding it easy reading Rashid. Just a wide and a single off the over.

New Zealand 69-4 (12 overs): Mitchell 16, Bracewell 1

A mix-up off the last ball and, if the thrown ball had hit the stumps, Bracewell may well have been out scrambling back into his crease.

Wicket! Latham lbw b Carse 24
New Zealand 66-4 (11.2 overs)

A wobble-seam delivery from Carse beats Latham and strikes him in front.

New Zealand 65-3 (11 overs): Mitchell 14, Latham 24

Rashid comes into bowl and Latham gets a couple of twos with sweeps, but is also beaten by a fantastic slider.

New Zealand 59-3 (10 overs): Mitchell 13, Latham 19

Another good over, Latham inside edges and is lucky to see it go past his stumps and down to the boundary for four. That's the end of the powerplay.

New Zealand 53-3 (9 overs): Mitchell 12, Latham 14

A lovely shot back over the bowlers head showing the whole face of the bat sees Mitchell add a four to his score and take the Black Caps over the fifty-mark.

New Zealand 46-3 (8 overs): Mitchell 6, Latham 13

Mitchell pulls in front of square for four which leads Carse to ask for a shoe change.

New Zealand 40-3 (7 overs): Mitchell 1, Latham 13

Latham clips airily but through the vacant square leg region and goes for four. He hooks a shorter ball which is stopped just inside the boundary. A low edge wide of the slips gives him another couple.

New Zealand 31-3 (6 overs): Mitchell 1, Latham 5

You get the feeling New Zealand will just look to see off the powerplay overs now.

New Zealand 28-3 (5 overs): Mitchell 1, Latham 4

Latham gets off the mark with a push past the bowler to the long off boundary.

Wicket! Ravindra c Overton b Wood 17
New Zealand 23-3 (4.2 overs)

That's a big wicket moving away from the left-hander who edges to slip.

New Zealand 22-2 (4 overs): Ravindra 17, Mitchell 0

England went up for a caught behind to Ravindra but it clipped the back leg. Carse looks tough to play, but the batsman gets on top of a ball on the up and drives for four through the covers.

New Zealand 18-2 (3 overs): Ravindra 13, Mitchell 0

Ravindra smacks Wood over mid-wicket for four. He will stay positive regardless of whether wickets fall at the other end.

Wicket! Williamson c Buttler b Carse 0
New Zealand 12-2 (2 overs)

Williamson gets his first first-baller in international cricket as Carse gets the ball to move just enough away from the legendary Black Cap to get him to nick behind.

Wicket! Young b Carse 5
New Zealand 12-1 (1.5 overs)

Carse angles the ball into Young's pads and it deflects onto the stumps.

New Zealand 6-0 (1 over): Young 1, Ravindra 5

Ravindra gets the first boundary clipping for four through mid-wicket.

Incredible Brook effort gives England some hope

Harry Brook played one of the great England ODI knocks hitting 135 off 101 balls, with 11 sixes, rescuing his side from 10-4.
Only one other Englishman reached double figures, Jamie Overton with 46, as Brook lifted his side to a likely under-par total of 223, but at least one they can hope to defend.
After Matt Henry (2-53) bowled Jamie Smith with the first delivery of the match Zakary Faulkner (4-41) the wickets of Ben Duckett (2), Joe Root (2) and Jacob Bethell (2) - the latter two fantastic deliveries smashing into the timber of the England batsmen.
Henry found the outside edge of Jos Buttler (4) and Foulkes did the same with Sam Curran (4) leaving England at 56-6, before at last Brook found a partner in the shape of Overton who hit seven boundaries in an 87-run partnership.
Jacob Duffy (3-55) took the wickets of Overton, Brydon Carse and Adil Rashid before an English-record 57-run partnership for the tenth wicket saw Brook lift himself well over the 100-mark, his fourth in 12 innings in New Zealand, and England over 200.

England 223 all out (35.2 overs)
Wicket! Brook c Smith b Santner 135

The incredible batting display comes to an end as Brook sweeps Santner into the arms of Smith at deep square leg.

England 223-9 (35 overs): Brook 135, Wood 5

With left leg high in the air, Brook hits a six over square leg for his 11th six. An extraordinary knock. Wood cuts the last ball of the over for four.

England 209-9 (34 overs): Brook 126, Wood 0

Henry on to bowl and Brook top-edges but it goes high over the boundary at fine leg. Brook chastises himself for missing out on a short ball he wanted to ramp over the keeper, but the next one he bangs over mid-wicket for a huge six, repeating the feat with another effort a little nearer cow corner.

England 190-9 (33 overs): Brook 108, Wood 0

Brook reverse sweeps but the ball is retrieved just inside the third man boundary. He gets a single off the last ball of the over to keep the strike.

England 187-9 (32 overs): Brook 105, Wood 0

Brook reaches for a wide one and it just goes over the boundary rope at point for six, before a crunching whack over deep mid-wicket. He then gets on one knee and thwacks another six over long leg to bring up his century.

'What a way to bring up a hundred!' - Brook scores century in first ODI

England 167-9 (31 overs): Brook 86, Wood 0

Brooks eschews singles off the first three balls of the over, before Wood defends the last two.

Wicket! Rashid c Bracewell b Duffy 4
England 166-9 (30 overs)

A Rashid chips the ball to Bracewell at mid-wicket. A poor dismissal as he looked comfortable in the middle.

England 164-8 (29 overs): Brook 85, Rashid 3

Just the three off Santner's over. They have struggled to get him off the square.

England 161-8 (28 overs): Brook 84, Rashid 1

Brook bludgeons the ball down the ground for four to get England over the 150-mark. He then pulls the last ball in between the fielders on the legside boundary and over the fence for six.

England 146-8 (27 overs): Brook 70, Rashid 1

Rashid far from the worst number ten, but it is a stretch to see him batting 23 overs.

Wicket! Carse c Williamson b Duffy 0
England 143-8 (26 overs)

What an awful shot. Duffy drops his length back for the new batsman and Carse hits his first ball straight to Williamson at gully like it is catching practice.

Wicket! Overton c Mitchell b Duffy 46
England 143-7 (25.5 overs)

Brook a little lucky with an edge which drops just a few yards short of third man but then Overton has a leading edge which Mitchell takes at the second attempt at extra cover. The end of a fine innings.

England 140-6 (25 overs): Brook 66, Overton 45

Overton rocks on the back foot and pulls Santner through mid-wicket for another four.

England 135-6 (24 overs): Brook 65, Overton 40

Overton with a thick outside edge but it goes over the keeper and slip and away for four. Overton's assault has allowed Brook to have a breather. Of their 79 run partnership, Overton has scored 41 compared to Brook 28, with ten extras.

England 127-6 (23 overs): Brook 64, Overton 34

The first chance off Brook, he hammered a sweep which Ravindra didn't have much time to see at 45 and can only stop the ball.

England 123-6 (22 overs): Brook 62, Overton 32

Overton smacks one four down the ground then another through mid-wicket. A fantastic knock this from England's number eight.

England 114-6 (21 overs): Brook 62, Overton 24

Santner brings himself onto bowl and he bowls his usual tight line allowing just three singles.

England 111-6 (20 overs): Brook 61, Overton 22

New Zealand use a review for a caught behind but us relaxed about it and there is clearly no nick. An errant, badly-timed sound it seemed. Overton is then struck on the chin as he tried to come down the pitch and the bowler Smith pulled back his length. There is a delay as his helmet is changed.

England 110-6 (19 overs): Brook 61, Overton 21

Duffy still struggling with his line a little bit but the batters struggle to line him up at least.

England 106-6 (18 overs): Brook 60, Overton 19

Brook deliberately edges down to narrow third man for four and it brings up the 50 partnership off 39 balls. A remarkable effort given the state of the game.

England 100-6 (17 overs): Brook 55, Overton 18

Duffy begins with three wides first up and then oversteps. Overton swings at the next but hits it straight up and into the hands of mid on. Overton smashes the last ball over deep mid-wicket for six. England's 100 is up and finally Brook has a partner in the middle.

England 87-6 (16 overs): Brook 53, Overton 12

Smith comes on to bowl in New Zealand's first bowling change and Brook gets some luck as he swings so hard at a ball that an outside edge goes inside third man for six - bringing up his fifty off 36 balls.

England 76-6 (15 overs): Brook 43, Overton 11

Not pretty but effective from Overton as he bludgeons a ball over mid on for four and becomes the second Englishman to move into double figures.

England 70-6 (14 overs): Brook 42, Overton 7

No one else has enjoyed facing Foulkes, but Brook has. Clipping him wide of mid on for another four. Overton survives a hybrid shout for leg before and caught behind, but he missed the ball and was outside the line.

England 65-6 (13 overs): Brook 37, Overton 7

Overton hits the penultimate ball down the ground inside mid off for four.

England 58-6 (12 overs): Brook 37, Overton 1

The over started with a buffet ball for Brook to slam to the point boundary, but what a performance it has been from Foulkes with four wickets bowling into the wind.

Wicket! Curran c Latham b Foulkes 6
England 56-6 (11.3 overs)

Smart captaincy as Santner keeps Foulkes on to bowl at Curran and he gets the outside, nicking behind for a simple catch this time for Latham.

England 51-5 (11 overs): Brook 32, Curran 6

Curran gets his first boundary smashing past mid on for four.

England 45-5 (10 overs): Brook 32, Curran 0

Brook clips the fourth ball of the over down to the long leg boundary and then hammers in beautiful fashion the next one over cow corner. He is batting on a different pitch to the rest. That is the end of the powerplay.

England 33-5 (9 overs): Brook 22, Curran 0

Curran survives a big lbw shout from the penultimate ball of the over. New Zealand send it upstairs and the review showed it hitting the top of off stump, but in the Umpire's Call region. A wicket maiden.

Wicket! Buttler c Latham b Henry
England 33-5 (8.3 overs)

More fine bowling as Henry moves the ball slightly away and it catches the outside edge of Buttler's bat with Latham making another good catch diving to his right.

England 33-4 (8 overs): Brook 22, Buttler 4

It looked like England might be just seeing out Foulkes' opening spell, but Brook has other ideas launching him over the mid-wicket boundary. He adds another drive through the covers off the last ball of the over.

England 23-4 (7 overs): Brook 12, Buttler 4

Brook with two lovely straight drives down the ground for four from slightly over-pitched deliveries, the first along the ground inside mid on, the second a little uppish well inside of mid off.

England 14-4 (6 overs): Brook 4, Buttler 4

Buttler only just avoids gifting a catch to square log off his second delivery, with the ball going on to register England's second boundary.

Wicket! Bethell b Foulkes 2
England 10-4 (5.1 overs)

Another unplayable delivery from Foulkes. A full ball swinging away late and Bethell has to join his team-mates in the shed.

England 10-3 (5 overs): Bethell 2, Brook 4

It took almost five overs, but England record their first boundary with Brook using his feet to come down the pitch and driving through the covers for four.

England 5-3 (4 overs): Bethell 1, Brook 0

Another maiden over. A big shout for leg before early in the over, but replays show Brook got an inside edge.

England 5-3 (3 overs): Bethell 1, Brook 0

Unsurprisingly, England happy to just bat out an over or two now, with Bethell just blocking Henry.

Wicket! Root b Foulkes 2
England 5-3 (2 overs)

Root will be furious but it was another fine ball, pitched perfectly, coming back into the England star and smacking into off and middle.

Wicket! Duckett c Latham b Foulkes 2
England 4-2 (1.3 overs)

A disastrous start for England, as Foulkes bowls a jaffa moving away from the left-hander late and Latham takes a fine catch diving to his left.

England 2-1 (1 over)

Henry is causing havoc with the new ball. Right on target he could also have taken the wicket of Duckett with a ball which went away from the left-hander.

Wicket! Smith b Henry 0
England 0-1 (0.1 overs)

First ball Henry nips one back in at England's Test wicketkeeper and it goes through the gate, flicking his pad before knocking into the timber. Root at the crease.
