Josh Hull replaces injured Mark Wood in England squad for rest of Sri Lanka Test series - 'A great opportunity'

England have been dealt a blow heading into the second Test against Sri Lanka, with Mark Wood ruled out due to a right thigh muscle strain. Wood has been in superb form this summer with his performances against the West Indies and in the opening test against Sri Lanka. His summer appears to be over, while Hull will now enter the fray looking to build on an impressive display for the England Lions.

Josh Hull has been called up to the England squad in place of the injured Mark Wood for the remaining two Tests against Sri Lanka.

Wood will not feature for the rest of the series after suffering from a right thigh muscle strain.

The 34-year did not take part in the final day of the first Test at Old Trafford on Saturday, as England moved 1-0 ahead in the series by securing a five-wicket win.

Leicestershire left-arm seamer Hull now comes into the squad for his first senior inclusion, as the Test series resumes at Lord's on Thursday.

It is a rapid rise to prominence for Hull, who only made his first appearance for the Lions against Sri Lanka earlier this month.

He took an impressive five wickets at the expense of only 74 runs, as the second-tier side sealed a seven-wicket victory.

“It was about half nine last night when I got the call from Brendon McCullum. It’s a very special moment,” Hull said in an interview with BBC Radio Leicester.

“It’s come around pretty quickly. I didn’t think it would happen this fast, but I am really excited to be joining them.

“I was happy with how I performed [for England Lions] but I never thought it would lead to a call this early.

“They’ve got Olly Stone there as the first replacement, so it will be a great opportunity to join up and be part of that environment.”
