Ben Stokes has been ruled out of action for the rest of the summer after tearing his hamstring, the ECB has announced.
The England men’s Test captain will miss the three-match series against Sri Lanka which gets underway on Wednesday, August 21.
Stokes was seen on crutches following his injury from the Northern Superchargers win over the Manchester Originals on Sunday.
He was helped to leave the field after facing just four balls and pulling up, holding his left hamstring.
Stokes had forgone the IPL and T20 World Cup to give himself the best chance of recovering from surgery to his left knee.
He took five wickets in England’s subsequent whitewash series victory over the West Indies.
And the all-rounder scored just four runs without taking a wicket in his first three appearances in The Hundred for three years.
The ECB confirmed that Stokes subsequently underwent scans on Tuesday that showed he had suffered a muscle tear.
In its statement, the ECB also announced it is not calling up a replacement for Stokes, who has not missed a Test since being named captain in 2022.
But Stokes is hoping to return to fitness by the time England travel to Pakistan for the Test series due to commence in October.
Vice-captain Ollie Pope will skipper the side for the very first time.
Stokes joins Zak Crawley as another key man to miss the series, with the opening batsman suffering a broken finger in the last Test against the West Indies.
In addition, fast bowler Dillon Pennington was denied the opportunity to earn his first cap against Sri Lanka through injury.
In eerily similar circumstances, the 25-year-old was also stricken by a hamstring issue while representing the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred.
