Bangladesh beat Pakistan in second Test to go 2-0 up and secure historic first series win

Bangladesh have pulled off a remarkable comeback victory in the second Test against Pakistan to go 2-0 up in the series. It is the first time the Tigers have beaten Pakistan in a series, and just the third time they have recorded a series win overseas, with Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim seeing them home on the fifth day.

Bangladesh have recorded a famous second Test victory against Pakistan in Rawalpindi, winning by six wickets to take the series 2-0.

Having won the opening Test by 10 wickets, Bangladesh went into the second with a real chance to record just their third overseas series win, and first against Pakistan.

It didn’t start well for the Tigers when they found themselves 26-6 in the first innings, trying to overhaul Pakistan’s 274. But wicketkeeper Litton Das’ brilliant 138 dragged them back into the match, as did support act Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s 78.

That meant Bangladesh posted a first innings total of 262, to leave the match on a knife-edge heading into the second innings. This time around, Bangladesh’s bowlers did well to restrict Pakistan to 172, Salman Agha top scoring with just 47 not out.

Set 185 to chase for what at times had seemed an improbable victory, Bangladesh saw their openers set a solid platform, and although they were pegged back by Pakistan, they still managed to canter home with six wickets to spare to spark wild celebrations.

Former captain Shakib Al Hasan hit the winning runs, a boundary cut through the covers for four as he finished on 21 not out, with Mushfiqur Rahim 22 not out.

While Bangladesh were left rejoicing with the manner of their victory, there was no such joy to be found in the Pakistan dressing room. This latest setback now extends Pakistan’s win-less home record to 10 matches, their last taste of success coming against South Africa back at the start of 2021.

The result also moves Bangladesh up to fourth in the World Test Championship table, with three wins and three losses from their six Tests played.

India continue to lead the Test Championship from Australia and New Zealand, with England relegated to fifth by Bangladesh’s triumph. Pakistan are down in eighth, narrowly ahead of the West Indies.

Next up for Pakistan is a home Test series against England in October, while Bangladesh head to India for a T20 series, before touring the West Indies later in the year.
