India set to host Commonwealth Games for second time with successful 2030 bid for Ahmedabad - 'An extraordinary honour'

After next year's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow has concluded, the baton will pass back to India to host the next edition of the event, which will also be the centenary Games in 2030. Ahmedabad has been chosen as the next host city, the second time India has held the Games following Delhi in 2010. Glasgow is hosting next year's edition of the event.

Ahmedabad is set to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, the second time India has held the event on its soil in the last two decades.
Delhi hosted the 2010 edition, and now Ahmedabad in the west of the country is set to welcome athletes to the 132,000-seater Narendra Modi Stadium in five years' time.
Glasgow is hosting the next edition in 2026, but the Scottish city was a relatively last-minute replacement for Victoria, who were due to host the event but pulled out in 2023 citing financial concerns.
The multi-sport event will have a pared-down look in Scotland next year, with just 10 sports featured and no athletes village.
Ahmedabad has been chosen ahead of Abuja in Nigeria for the centenary Games in 2030, with the decision set to be ratified by the general assembly next month.
And the 132,000-seater stadium will form a backdrop to what could be an impressive event, having previously hosted the cricket World Cup final in 2023.
"It would be an extraordinary honour for India to host the Centenary Commonwealth Games in Amdavad," said Dr. P T Usha, President of Commonwealth Games Association India.

"We see the 2030 Games as a powerful opportunity to inspire our youth, strengthen international partnerships and contribute to a shared future across the Commonwealth."
"Today’s recommendation is strategically important for the future of the Commonwealth Sport Movement," added Katie Sadleir, chief executive officer of Commonwealth Sport.
"It builds on the platform that Glasgow 2026 will provide and sets a clear direction for the years ahead.
"The Centenary Games in 2030 offer an opportunity not just to celebrate 100 years of history, but to demonstrate how the Commonwealth Games can continue to evolve."
There had been some fears for the future of the event, with Victoria’s withdrawal from hosting next year’s event coming a few years after Durban also pulled out of hosting rights - the South African city having been due to host the 2022 edition.
As such, next year’s event in Glasgow will feature just 10 sports - 3x3 basketball, artistic gymnastics, athletics, bowls, boxing, judo, netball, swimming, track cycling and weightlifting.
