The winner will immediately have to face former WBC champ Vitali Klitschko, who announced he was coming out of a two year retirement and tried to leap-frog over number one contender Peter and face Maskaev first.
But a $multi-million deal to have Peter step aside and allow comebacking Klitschko to fight for the belt in Russia on June 2 fell apart.
A lot of people in boxing, including Team Maskaev, the WBC and HBO, wanted the more marketable (and revenue-rich) Klitschko to get the shot against the vulnerable-looking Russian champion.
However, Peter, who twice beat James Toney in what the WBC called "final eliminators", will now get his chance.
