Ponce De Leon victorious

Daniel Ponce De Leon made a successful third defence of his WBO super-bantamweight title at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas on Saturday night with a routine eighth round stoppage win over Al Seeger.

De Leon was forced to make the fight from the opening bell, chasing down the elusive Seeger, eventually stopping him after 1:43 of the eighth.Seeger, 27-2, came out in the opening session to meet the champion head on but he was always second best and often missed wildly to leave himself open to the counter punch.
De Leon made Seeger pay dearly for his erratic display in the fifth round when an accurate straight left hand floored the overmatched challenger. Seeger gamely rose to his feet and grittily fought back but the knockdown proved to be the beginning of the end.
From then on Ponce De Leon punished Seeger until the referee stepped in to save him from further punishment. De Leon improves to 30-1 (28).On the undercard, Manuel Garnica very nearly caused an upset against local hero Juan Lazcano in a non title 10 round bout.
In a tough evenly matched battle Lazcano managed to attract the eye of all three judges to edge home unanimously 97-93, 98-92 and 96-94. Lazcano, who improved to 37-3-1, was booed from the ring while Garnica, 20-6, enjoyed the appreciation of the knowledgeable boxing crowd.In a welterweight bout undefeated prospect Andre Berto scored a fifth round knockout win over Las Vegas veteran James Crayton. Berto is now 15-0 (13) while Crayton falls to 34-23-2.Another local favourite on the card, Antonio Escalante knocked out Omar Adorno in the second round to improve his slate to 14-1-(9).In other action former super-flyweight champion Gerry Penalosa knocked down veteran Mauricio Martinez three times on his way to an impressive ninth round stoppage win. The end came when a well timed left hand to the jaw decked Martinez after 1:06 of the ninth session.In other action former junior-welterweight title challenger Ben Tackie scored a unanimous 10 round decision over Esau Herrera. The scores were 95-94 twice and 97-92. At featherweight Miguel Roman knocked out Andres Ledesma in the third round.
