Former world boxing champion James ’Lights Out’ Toney has had his One year suspension for using steroids cut in half following an appeal.
The 38 year-old heavyweight from Sherman Oaks tested positive for the steroids Stanozolol and Boldenone following a split decision win against Danny Batchelder in San Jose, California on May 24. Toney was banned for one year and fined $2,500.
Toney appeared at the appeal hearing on Monday with his lawyer Arnold Joseph and promoter Dan Goossen and was informed the ban had been cut to six months, meaning he will be eligible to fight again after November 24. Toney had always denied ever knowingly taking drugs.
Batchelder, who also tested positive for steroids, also appealed but failed to show up at the same hearing, resulting in his original year’s ban being upheld.
