Ryan Garcia beat Devin Haney in one of the biggest shocks in recent boxing history with a majority decision victory over the reigning light welterweight champion in Brooklyn, New York. The 25-year-old, who had garnered plenty of media attention for his pre-fight behaviour, knocked Haney down three times during the bout, with the scorecard reading 112-112, 114-110 and 115-109.

'This is my time, my destiny’ – Fury sends fiery message to doubters

Ryan Garcia produced one of the biggest shocks in recent boxing history with a majority decision victory over Devin Haney at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Garcia did not make the agreed 140lbs weight for the bout, weighing in 3.2lbs heavier than he was supposed to. As a result, it threw the fight into jeopardy, but an agreement was reached where should Garcia win, he would not be eligible to take Haney’s WBC light-welterweight title.
The 25-year-old Garcia had been receiving plenty of media attention for his behaviour leading up to the fight.
However, on the night, the overwhelming favourite, Haney, struggled, with Garcia rocking him in the first round with a left hook.
'King Ryan' sent the 'Dream' to the canvas in rounds seven and 11, and he also landed a right hook that sent Haney down in the tenth. It was the first time Haney had been knocked down in his professional career.
Garcia showed his naivety at times as he was docked a point for punching during a break in the seventh round, and he also turned his back on Haney at intervals during the bout, with the undefeated champion often the one controlling the exchanges and pawing the advancing Garcia away with his jab.
However, victory went to the mercurial Garcia, who arrived in New York with a 24-1 record and fresh off his clinical finish against Oscar Duarte, knocking the Mexican out in Houston back in December.
The scorecards read 112-112, 114-110 and 115-109 in Garcia’s favour, and the victor said afterwards: "You really thought I was crazy? You all lost your own minds.
"You guys overegg everything," he continued.

"I'm disappointed about my performance," Haney said afterwards.
"I [showed I] was a true champion and I could fight after being knocked down. I fell asleep on the left hook. We trained for it but I got in there and fell asleep.
"I gave him a shot, it's only right he gives me a shot back. He didn't make weight, so I'm still the champion. We can run it back."
