More than three hundred mourners turned out at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Melvindale on Monday to pay tribute to former middleweight contender Mickey Goodwin.
The 51 year-old, who died of a stroke last Tuesday, was a world class middleweight, who trained at the famous Kronk Gym in Detroit under the tutelage of Emanuel Steward. The legendry trainer and former multi weight world champion Tommy Hearns were amongst the mourners.
Goodwin made his pro debut in 1977, compiling a record of 40-2-1-(28). Unfortunately, what was to be the highlight of his career, a world title challenge against undisputed middleweight king Marvellous Marvin Hagler, failed to materialise when Goodwin suffered a broken hand whilst preparing for the biggest fight of his career in 1982.
Goodwin, who ran a successful boxing club, was laid to rest at the family plot at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Wyandotte.
