Gennady Golovkin has been appointed as the new chair of World Boxing's Olympic Commission as the newfound federation tries to get boxing reinstated at the Olympic Games. The sport has been dropped for the next Games in Los Angeles in 2028, but it is hoped that Golovkin's stature will aid relations between World Boxing and the International Olympic Committee to overturn the decision.

Gennady Golovkin has been named as the new chair of World Boxing’s Olympic Commission.
Golovkin, the former middleweight world champion, will be in charge of trying to install the organisation as boxing’s go-to international federation.
The International Boxing Association is no longer recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and boxing was dropped from the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
World Boxing was launched last year and has 44 members, and it will be down to Golovkin, a former Olympic silver medallist at Athens 2004, to ensure that the organisation forms a strong relationship with the IOC.
Golovkin is already recognised as one of the greatest boxers of all time and was recently appointed as Kazakhstan’s president of their National Olympic Committee earlier this year.
In a statement, World Boxing outlined Golovkin’s targets and said that it was aiming to reinstate boxing at LA 2028.

“Golovkin will work closely with World Boxing’s leadership to manage the organisation’s relationship with the IOC and oversee the pathway to ensuring that boxing is restored to the sport programme for the Los Angeles 2028 Games,” the statement read.
“Other members of the commission will be added in the coming weeks to ensure it is diverse and representative of the global boxing community.”

The organisation also said that the new Olympic Commission would be looking to add more members to the federation, as well as being financially secure and fully supporting the IOC’s recognition process.
“As well as for all the sports world, it is important to preserve boxing as an Olympic sport and this will be my top priority,” Golovkin said.
“I also intend to work closely with the IOC on issues of boxing’s commitment to the Olympic values of honesty, fairness and transparency.
“I am confident that my experience as a professional athlete will help build systemic work within World Boxing and through joint efforts we will be able to give boxing a new impetus to its development, but there is still much to be done.”
