The latest edition of Debutant Watch takes a trip south to Plymouth, Devon where we feature Chris Adaway. Chris feels he has gained enough experience as an amateur boxer to make a successful transition into the paid ranks, and makes his debut on home turf in Plymouth's first professional boxing show in over two years on Sunday afternoon fighting under the watchful eye of manager Errol Johnson. The 21 year old will debut at lightweight in a four rounder against Swindons’ Joe Beedon.
What made you want to start boxing?
“I went with one of my mates from school when I was 11 and he quit after a while, I just kept going after that and just fell in love with boxing.”
Did you have a boxing idol when you were younger?
“Ricky Hatton was my favorite fighter without a doubt. The way he fought was top class.”
Did you do much amateur boxing?
“I boxed for the Mayflower Amateur Boxing Club in Plymouth all my amateur career. I got selected to fight for England. I had seventy fights in total and boxed in the quarter finals of the elite ABA’s twice and also got to an ABA semifinal.”
How do you know the time is right to turn pro?
“I have done enough in the amateurs now and I never really felt like I got the break I deserved. I always wanted that ABA title, I was coming close but losing too many bad decisions when I was away from home.”
Do you see a difference in the pro and amateur codes?
“The way the amateur sport used to be there is a huge difference. But the way the amateur sport has changed in the last twelve months it has taken on a more pro-style fighting without head guards. I boxed five times as an amateur without a head guard and that’s another reason why I turned pro because I might as well fight four, three minute rounds and start getting paid for it.”
Do you work full-time alongside boxing?
“I am a self-employed window cleaner so that means I can juggle my work and my boxing training. I work early and then I can concentrate on my training.”
What sort of fighting style do you have?
“I have always been a boxer rather than a fighter, I can fight well on the back foot. Since turning pro I have been working on pushing forward more. My jab is probably my best shot now and it stops my opponents getting near me.”
What ambitions/expectations do you have for your pro career?
“I wouldn’t be in the sport if I didn’t want to go all the way, that’s every boxers dream. Realistically I want to win the British title and by the end of next year would like to be challenging for a southern area title.”
