Oscar De La Hoya bludgeoned Ricardo Mayorga to a sixth round stoppage, capturing the WBC super-welterweight title on his return after a 20-month absence. De La Hoya dominated from the opening bell, dropping Mayorga with a left hook in the first 60 seconds

"He sensed this is serious business," De La Hoya said in a ringside interview after the fight.
"I stood my ground and showed that bully that 'Hey, you are not going to push me around.'"
De La Hoya landed 116 of 264 punches and 48 of 108 jabs, while Mayorga, who had infuriated De La Hoya with pre-fight trash-talk, connected on only 58 of his 333 punches and six of 136 jabs.
"He fought recklessly, but I stood my ground, and he saw I wouldn't back down," De La Hoya added.
De La Hoya (38-4, 30 KOs) showed no sign of rust despite being out of the ring since losing to then middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins in September 2004.
After dropping Mayorga in the first, De La Hoya floored the 33-year-old again early in the sixth. A sustained barrage sent Mayorga to the canvas later in the round before De La Hoya finished the job at 1:25 in the sixth.
Mayorga (27-6-1), who won the WBC title in a 12-round decision against Michele Piccirillo last August, had threatened to pull out of the fight last week.
He had said he expected to get $8 million for the fight, the same as De La Hoya, and only told promoters on Thursday that he would go ahead with the fight. His original deal was for $2 million.
