Broner did little or nothing for 11 rounds as he held and fouled his fellow American welterweight - he was deducted a point for holding in the 11th round - before making an astonishing bid to snatch victory in the 12th round when he dropped Porter with a left hook.
Porter recovered from being floored to take a deserved win with the judges scoring the fight 114-112, 115-111 and 118-108 in his favour.
He felt he was well worthy of the win having outworked Broner for most of the night.
Broner put a brave face on defeat, but he has now fell to 30-2 and with this second loss, questions marks loom large over the former world champion.
Broner was once touted as a great boxer in the Floyd Mayweather mould, but unless he finds the desire to match his mouth, he is likely to remain a figure who talks a good game rather than fight them.
Kevin of Iole of Yahoo Sports had this to say about Broner's dismal performance.
