By Clive Bernath: Lightening Lenny Daws retained his British junior-welterweight title by virtue of a 12 round draw against Welsh challenger Jason Cook at the York Hall, Bethnal Green on Friday night.
Cook was the heavier puncher early on and rocked Daws’ with his trade mark left hook in the opening round but the younger fresher champion, as expected, broke Cook down slowly in the latter rounds with his higher workrate and can count himself very unfortunate not to have scored a close but deserved unanimous decision win. But the judges did not see it that way and scored the bout 115-114 for Cook, 115-114 for Daws, while the third official saw the fight even at 114-114. SecondsOut scored the bout 115-112 in favour of Daws.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the fight Daws said: “I really thought I did enough to win. I thought I nicked the fight.”
To his credit Cook was honest enough to admit his London rival may just have deserved the verdict. Speaking afterwards the 34 year-old Welshman said: “Maybe Lenny did enough to win. He came on strong at the end but I proved everybody wrong. Many people including Lenny thought I was gonna get stopped but I proved them wrong. I’m happy to have a rematch to put the record straight.”
