Before the race Poiree was tipped as the favourite after his Oberhof win last season, but until the final shoot it appeared that a German would win the race.
Ricco Gross dominated the field after the second lap, but faltered on the last standing shoot.
With Saturday's 10km sprint winner Vincent Defrasne leading after the first shoot, Gross came into Shoot 2 and cleared all five targets, leaving 21 seconds in front of Defrasne who surprisingly missed a target, while Gross' team mate Michael Roesch hit only three targets and went out of contention for a top-ten finish.
Gross preserved his clean scorecard in the first standing shoot and Hanevold, trailing by 11 seconds, cleared all five targets. Before the final shoot a chase group led by Sergei Rozhkov was formed, composed of Ilmars Bricis, Michael Greis, Nikolay Kruglov, Defrasne, and Maxim Tchoudov, third on Saturday.
Latvia's Bricis ultimately shot a perfect 20-for-20,
The lead group only managed to come within twenty seconds of Gross, but it would proven enough to overtake the World No. 23 who missed two targets in the final shoot, allowing Hanevold to take the lead clearing all his targets.
Hanevold had a margin of more than 20 seconds as a Poiree - Sven Fischer - Tchoudov trio fought for the remaining podium places.
Fischer won the final sprint in front of the Poiree and the young Russian.
Sunday was Hanevold's ninth World Cup victory and moved him into 11th place in the overall standings.
