New York's fifth consecutive loss, and sixth straight on the road, lowered their season record to 8-11 and left them half a game behind Tampa Bay.
"We're just going through a bad streak right now and we just need to turn it around," Yankees manager Joe Torre said.
Crawford greeted reliever Mike Myers with his fourth homer of the year, making a loser of Taiwanese starter Chien-Ming Wang, who pitched well in his first start of the season after beginning the year on the disabled list with a hamstring injury.
"I was just trying to put the ball in play," Crawford said.
"I was just glad to hit it. I was hoping (it was gone). I wasn't sure. I think that's probably the biggest home run I've hit."
Alex Rodriguez, who has hit 14 home runs this month, went 0-for-3 as his 23-game hitting streak ended on a bad day for New York, who also lost shortstop Derek Jeter through injury.
Jeter was forced to leave the game after the first inning when he was hit on the left thigh by a Scott Kazmir pitch, although the player expects to recover quickly from what he described as "just a bruise".
Vernon Wells went 4-for-5, including a home run, to help the Toronto Blue Jays complete a two-game sweep of the Red Sox in Boston with a 10-3 victory.
Toronto had 17 runs and 29 hits in the two games after arriving in Boston on a five-game losing streak.
The Los Angeles Angels blew a 7-0 lead before rallying to score in the bottom of the ninth and 10th to beat the Tigers 9-8. Losing pitcher Todd Jones' throwing error set up the winning run.
Fausto Carmona out-pitched Johan Santana, working 7 2/3 innings, to snap a personal 11-decision losing streak as the Cleveland Indians beat the Twins 5-3 in Minnesota. Santana, the two-time Cy Young Award winner, lost his second straight at home, where his 17-decision winning was streak snapped earlier this month.
