To replace the 28-year-old Japanese on the roster, the Rays recalled infielder Jorge Cantu from the Triple A Durham Bulls, they said.
Iwamura, 28, who shifted to Major League Baseball this last off season, ranks ninth in the American League in hitting with a .339 batting average (19-for-56).
He leads the Rays in on-base percentage at .479 (fifth in the AL), runs scored with 15 and walks with 15. He has hit safely in 14 of 17 starts and has scored the tying or winning run in six of Tampa Bay's eight victories.
Cantu, 25, who hit 28 homers and drove in 117 runs for the Rays in 2005, was batting .267 (20-for-75) at Durham with five doubles, a triple and eight RBI in 19 games.
