TOKYO, March 21 (Reuters) - Japanese baseball player Ichiro Suzuki, who accumulated the most hits ever in top tier professional baseball in 28 seasons across Japan and the United States, announced his retirement on Thursday.
Suzuki, 45, made the announcement in a Seattle Mariners statement after playing for the team in the second game of their Major League Baseball opening series against the Oakland Athletics. (Reporting by Jack Tarrant Editing by Toby Davis)
