American 100m favourite Tyson Gay after winning quarter-final heat: "I tried to run 10.2 or 10.3 but I couldn't run that slow. It's the fastest track I've ever run on."
Briton Marlon Devonish after finishing second in heat to Gay: "I'm in the shape of my life and I'm a championship performer. I plan to get into the final and go hell for leather
Sweden's defending champion Carolina Kluft leading heptathlon after four events: "My day was fine, thank you... I am very satisfied with my first day. I didn't have any problems with the weather. Just got to keep it going tomorrow."
British heptatlhete Kelly Sotherton in third: "It feels good, it is a lot better than I have done all year. Every performance was consistent and I know that I can carry that on to Sunday which means I know I can win a medal so anything less than that is a disappointment."
Sotherton's compatriot Jessica Ennis, in fourth: "It was a good day. To start it that way with the hurdles was brilliant, then the high jump was a solid performance and then the shot putt was an absolute disaster. I tensed up and tried to throw it too hard with my upper body and not really using my legs and it was just awful. I was a bit down after that but I knew I had to run a good 200m. But it is the heptathlon and you have to get over a bad event and focus on the next event and that is exactly what I did. I am absolutely delighted with a PB in the 200, I knew I had to run hard and it was pure determination to make up for the shot."
Ethiopia's Tirunesh Dibaba after winning a second straight 10,000m world title: ""I almost quit the race but because I was representing my country, I hung in there. That was the hardest race of my life. I had terrible stomach pain and then I was so far back I thought it would be impossible to come back. But I did it for my country. I was struggling but I told myself to hang in. I didn't want to let down the people back home in Ethiopia. I bumped into my team mate (Mestawet) Tufa. She fell and I didn't see her so I almost went down too. It was the biggest accomplishment of my career to fight back and win."
Briton Jo Pavey after just missing out on 10,000m medal in major championship debut: "I just couldn't hold on. It's disappointing not to get a medal but it's better than it being a total disaster. I've got to be pleased in some ways but it is so frustrating."
Reese Hoffa praising team-mate and silver medalist Adam Nelson after winning shot put: "Adam showed me the ropes. For many years he kicked my butt in practice to make sure I was physically and mentally ready. The tradition goes on. I think it's because in the United States, even just to make the team, you really have to earn your way there."
Adam Nellson on Hoffa's performance: "Reese flat out beat me tonight, 22.04 in a major championship is an unbelievable accomplishment."
Britain's European indoor world champion Phillips Idowu finishing first in triple jump group: "I was really relaxed and I could have opened out a bit more. But if I can jump like that, the way I did, I am confident that when I am under more pressure I can go further. The main job was to come here and make sure I am in the final and I have done that."
