The championships last took place in 2017 in St Moritz. In the men’s events Marcel Hirscher of Austria won gold in the Slalom and Giant Slalom, while Switzerland’s Beat Feuz took gold in Downhill and his compatriot Luca Aerni was victorious in the Alpine Combined, meanwhile Canada’s Erik Guay took the top spot in the Super G.
American Mikaela Shiffrin took gold in the women’s Slalom, France’s Tessa Worley triumphed in the Giant Slalom, Wendy Holdener from host country Switzerland won in the Alpine Combined event, Austria’s Nicole Schmidhofer won the Super G and Slovenian Ilka Stuhec beat off competition in the Downhill.
Can Lindsey Vonn win big in her last championships before retirement?
Lindsey Vonn recently announced she would retire after competing in the World Championships, in the Downhill and Super G events. She last won gold medals at the World Championships in those events in 2009. However, having missed out on the Alpine Ski World Cup thanks to a knee injury which she picked up in November, she could well be less fit than her competitors. And some strong competition she faces, especially from compatriot Mikaela Shiffrin, who will be confident after dominating the 2018/19 World Cup.
That said, with a massive 82 gold World Cup race podiums among a huge list of achievements, if she is relatively fit and well it’s impossible to write Vonn off.
