Sofia Goggia of Italy won her 20th World Cup race in extraordinary fashion in St Moritz, putting in an unbeatable time 24 hours after breaking her hand. Goggia came second in Switzerland a day earlier but needed to be flown to Milan for surgery after fracturing her hand in two places while hitting a gate. She recovered to take an incredible victory ahead of Slovenia's Ilka Stuhec.

Italy’s Sofia Goggia earned an extraordinary 20th career World Cup win in St Moritz, taking gold just 24 hours after breaking her hand so badly that she required emergency surgery.
Goggia finished second in Switzerland on Friday despite hitting a gate so hard she fractured her hand in two places and travelled by helicopter to Milan to go under the knife.
Less than 24 hours later, with a plate and nine screws in her left hand, the Italian lined up for the downhill in St Moritz once again with a pole taped to her damaged left hand.
Remarkably, the 30-year-old went one better than a day earlier and put in a sensational performance to finish 0.43 seconds ahead of second-placed Ilka Stuhec of Slovenia.
Germany’s Kira Weidle also earned a podium place in third, with Mikaela Shiffrin of the USA fourth and Austria’s Cornelia Huetter fifth.

The Italian also closed the gap to overall leader Shiffrin, moving up two places to second on 425 points, 50 behind the American.
Goggia was only sixth fastest in the opening two sectors but picked up momentum in sectors four and five, reaching dizzying speeds to cross the line with an unbeatable time of 1:28.85.
