Downhill star Sofia Goggia has become the latest big name to suffer a fall, the Italian Winter Sports Federaton has confirmed.
Goggia, 32, has been in decent form this season with a pair of third-place finishes in the downhill at Cortina as well as a fifth in the super-G before taking a surprise fifth in the giant slalom at Kronplatz.
However on Monday morning reports emerged that Goggia had suffered a big accident, colliding with a gate during a training session at the Temu ski resort in Bergamo.
The reports said that the serious incident led to an initial diagnosis of a fractured tibia and fibula although the Italian Winter Sports Federation said there was as yet "no diagnosis".
However in an update posted on Monday afternoon, the FISI confirmed that Goggia had fractured her tibia and tibial malleolus in a new statement.
She will be operated on later on Monday and will miss the rest of the season.
"After the fall suffered during morning training on the Casola track in Ponte di Legno, in the province of Brescia, Sofia Goggia underwent a CT scan and an MRI at the La Madonnina Clinic in Milan which revealed a fracture of the tibia and malleolus tibial bone of the right leg, which will be surgically reduced during the afternoon.
"The operation will be carried out by Dr. Andrea Panzeri, President of the FISI Medical Commission, in collaboration with Dr. Riccardo Accept, head of the Traumatology Unit of the IRCCS Galeazzi Hospital – Sant'Ambrogio.
"Sofia Goggia suffered the injury during a training session, hitting a gate with her right leg on a right-handed curve. The 2023/24 winter of the thirty-one year old from Bergamo therefore ends with two victories and six podiums overall."
It is the latest in a series of injuries that have marred Goggia’s career. She broke her ankle in 2018, fractured her wrist in 2020 and in 2021 broke a bone in her right knee, injuring her knee again in January 2022 just before the Winter Olympics.
Even before then she tore her ACL twice during the early years of her career (2010 and 2013) as well as fracturing her tibia in 2012.
It also yet another serious injury in the 2023-24 skiing season that has seen a worrying rise in such cases.
The most notable was Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, who suffered a brutal fall that has led to the Norwegian saying that his main focus is just being able to walk again not race again.
Alexis Pinturault, Petra Vlhova and Corinne Suter have all damaged their knee ligaments whilst Mikaela Shiffrin also suffered a big crash although she fortunately managed to avoid serious injury.
