Marcel Hirscher equals Hermann Maier's record in Schladming slalom

Austria's Marcel Hirscher became the joint second most successful skier of all time, equalling the record of the legendary Hermann Maier, as he won the slalom in the Alpine Skiing World Cup round in Schladming.

He clocked a time 0.2 seconds quicker than that of Norway's Henrik Kristoffersen in the first run, and extended that in the second to secure his 54th World Cup win and 119th World Cup podium.
It was a monumental effort after Kristoffersen's second run and it was Austria's 500th World Cup victory.
There was controversy during the second run as snowballs were thrown at Kristoffersen, but the Norwegian was gracious in defeat.
"It's really a lack of respect... a race in Schladming is like a home race for me so it's not cool," Kristoffersen told Austrian broadcaster ORF.
It was Kristoffersen's eighth second place of the season, with six of those behind Hirscher.
The roles were briefly reversed in Sunday's slalom at Kitzbuehel when Kristoffersen claimed his first World Cup win of the season, with Hirscher second.
"This rivalry with Hirscher is really fun," said Kristoffersen. "He is the second best skier of all time."
And Hirscher himself was quick to condemn those spectators who attempted to interfere with his rival's run.
Mikaela Shiffrin also weighed in, expressing her disgust for those who threw the snowballs.

Britain's Dave Ryding was 2.02 seconds off the pace in the first run, eventually finishing in 12th.
