Mikaela Shiffrin claims slalom World Cup season title with Ofterschwang victory

The 22-year-old took the lead after the first run with a time of 54.25, 0.30 seconds ahead of second place Katharina Gallhuber of Austria. Gallhuber's compatriot Bernadette Schild finished third, 0.39 seconds behind the leader.

Shiffrin's second run, though slightly slower at 54.85 seconds, was still enough to seal her victory.

The Austrians were upset by Switzerland's Wendy Holdener, who finished second with an overall time of 1:49.19 - 0.09 seconds behind Shiffrin - and third place Frida Hansdotter of Sweden with 1:49.82.

“For Wendy, I knew she had a really good run because I could hear the announcers from the top, but I thought ‘not today Wendy!’” Shiffrin said, according to U.S. Ski & Snowboard.

The result comes after Shiffrin took the overall World Cup title finishing third in the giant slalom on Friday, and an Olympic gold medal for Team USA in the same event last month at PyeongChang.

“My biggest challenge this year has not been the Olympics or the (World Cup) overall or any of that, but getting motivated for these last races," she said.
