Mikaela Shiffrin lands 95th World Cup win, admits Petra Vlhova injury is 'enormous blow for the sport'

The women's Alpine Skiing World Cup switches its focus to speed with downhill races in Cortina d'Ampezzo next weekend, and Mikaela Shiffrin is sad to see Petra Vlhova will not be there. Vlhova will not race again this season after suffering a serious knee injury in Saturday's outing on home show in Slovakia. In Vlhova's absence, Shiffrin claimed her 95th World Cup triumph by 0.14 seconds.

Mikaela Shiffrin says that she will miss her rivalry with stricken Petra Vlhova after taking slalom victory on Slovakian snow.

Olympic champion Vlhova will not race again this season after suffering a serious knee injury in a giant slalom race.

In Vlhova's absence, Shiffrin claimed her 95th World Cup triumph by a margin of 0.14 seconds.

"I've been thinking about [Vlhova] a lot the last 24 hours," Shiffrin said. "Honestly, this is just an enormous blow for the sport. It sucks. For me personally, over these years, I've grown to love the battles with her, and I think today she would be just so strong, so I really miss watching her ski today and having that battle."

Gold was Shiffrin's 150th World Cup podium finish, just five shy of the all-time record held by Ingemar Stenmark.

The American's winning time of 1:48.21 across two runs was enough to pip Croatian teenager Zrinka Ljutic, who won silver, with bronze going to Anna Swenn Larsson of Sweden.
