The Portuguese manager gave McTominay his debut at United in a 2-0 defeat to Arsenal in May 2017, and a year later, the midfielder won Mourinho's player of the year award.
Now he reportedly wants to add the Scotland international to Madrid's squad.
However, McTominay is valued very highly at Napoli, with his club team-mate and compatriot Billy Gilmour stressing his importance in an exclusive interview with TNT Sports.
McTominay required a heart procedure to correct an arrhythmia at the start of September, which Napoli described as a ”complete success”. He is expected to return to action after the international break.
"Thriving Manchester United reject Scott McTominay is reportedly being eyed by Real Madrid," writes the outlet.
"His impressive displays in the heart of Napoli’s midfield have caught the eye of Real Madrid.
"That’s according to Il Mattino, who claim Los Blancos have already approached McTominay’s representatives over a potential move to the Bernabeu."
The report adds: "News of Real’s reported interest in McTominay comes amid an alleged contract standoff between the Scotland international and Napoli.
"McTominay, who has two years left on his existing deal, is said to want a bumper new deal at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium."

Man Utd make Gabriel new offer

The Guardian reports that Manchester United made their teenage sensation JJ Gabriel an official scholarship contract offer, but adds they "remain at risk of losing the teenage forward for as little as £350,000".
The outlet states: "Under Premier League youth rules, Gabriel would have been able to leave for a rival for nothing in January if the club had not offered him a formal scholarship for next season. The Guardian can reveal that the offer has now been lodged with the player.
"Whether he accepts it or not – and it appears unlikely he will stay at Old Trafford – any Premier League club must now negotiate a fee directly with United for the player. If one is not reached, compensation will be set by a Professional Football Compensation Committee tribunal.
"At a tribunal, United would expect to receive in excess of £3 million, plus a clause in the deal granting them 20% of his next transfer fee.
"In a previous tribunal for a high-profile academy player, Liverpool were required to pay Chelsea £2.8m up front – with an additional £1.2m in performance-related add-ons – for Rio Ngumoha, and a 20% sell-on clause was inserted in the deal.
"His next move is yet to be decided, though it is believed he favours a move to Europe, where compensation would be significantly lower. Real Madrid are favourites to sign him, with Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain all monitoring developments."

Arsenal linked with Mexican sensation

Arsenal have been linked with a move for Mexican teenage attacking midfielder Gilberto Mora.
The Mirror carries a report from TEAMtalk, which suggests The Gunners have made contact with the 17-year-old's side Club Tijuana.
The article reads: "Mora will turn 18 this month, meaning Arsenal, who are long-term admirers, can sign him in January. He remains under contract with The Xolos until 2029, but FIFA rules that blocked an international move while he was a minor no longer apply once he turns 18.
"Scouts monitored him during the World Cup, where he became Mexico’s youngest-ever player at the tournament. He has already represented his nation 13 times, leading to interest from other big clubs such as Real Madrid and Barcelona.
"The report claims Arsenal are prepared to move more 'aggressively' than their Premier League rivals and other European sides as they look to pull off what would be a real coup. It also states that Mora has a release clause in the region of €20–25m (£16.9-£21.1m)."
